As we prepare for the upcoming back-to-school season, Tonic Health is steadfastly committed to addressing the concerning issue of hidden sugars lurking in our children's lunchboxes.

 

🍬 The Bitter Truth About Hidden Sugars 🍬

 

It's a sobering fact: the typical child’s lunchbox can contain up to five times the NHS recommended daily amount of sugar for kids. The NHS recommends that children aged four to six should consume no more than five teaspoons of sugar a day. Shockingly, many lunchboxes are packed with upwards of twenty-five teaspoons of sugar!

Excessive sugar consumption in children can lead to a host of health problems, including obesity, dental issues, and an increased risk of chronic diseases. But it doesn't stop there. Sugar also plays havoc with their learning and development, causing blood sugar spikes and crashes that impact their concentration and behaviour in the classroom.

 

🔍 A Shocking Reality 🔍

Our recent survey revealed some eye-opening statistics. A staggering 67% of parents express concern about their child’s sugar intake, especially during the back-to-school period. However, only 28% felt confident in their ability to understand food labels for sugar content. Common culprits include cereal bars, fruit and nut bars, sugar-sweetened yoghurts, and smoothies – all too often misunderstood as healthy options.

At Tonic Health, we've decided to bring this issue to light in a tangible way. We've demonstrated the impact of sugar through two lunchboxes: the blue box containing a whopping 56.2g of sugar and the pink one with 18.2g. We featured high-sugar items like Tesco Yogurt Coated Strawberry Bites, Innocent Smoothie Strawberry Raspberry & Apple, and Munch Bunch Double Up Fromage Frais Strawberry & Vanilla yoghurt. These seemingly innocent products alone contain double the NHS recommended daily sugar intake for kids.
