A question we get asked more than ever is, can you overdose on vitamins? So we’re here to set the record straight.

Vitamins are essential for your health as they play so many roles in the body but not all vitamins are equal… There are 13 vitamins in total that either fall into the category of fat soluble vitamins or water soluble vitamins and the clues are in the names.

Fat soluble vitamins are stored in the body in fat tissue and the liver and can be stored from days to months.

Fat soluble vitamins:

  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin E
  • Vitamin K

Water soluble vitamins on the other hand can’t be absorbed in the body, so your body uses what it needs and the rest is flushed down the toilet (quite literally). And because these vitamins can’t be stored in the body, it’s important we consume these vitamins on a daily basis.

Water soluble vitamins:

  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin B (vitamin B1- vitamin B12)

We know that your immune system needs a high dose of vitamins for fuel to fight off infections or else it’s hello days in bed with the sniffles. But how much is too much when it comes to the vital infection fighting vitamins?

Vitamin C is actually safer than water. No seriously. You can die from drinking too much water but you can’t die from too much vitamin C so it’s as simple as that. Only in some cases does too much vitamin C potentially cause diarrhoea or nausea when consumed in mega doses 10g. Each sachet of our high dose immunity drinks contains 1500 mg / 1.5 g.

When it comes to vitamin D, you can take too much of it because it is a fat soluble vitamin which means it stores and can build up in fat tissue. But the chances of overdosing on vitamin D is pretty low. To put it into perspective, you would have to eat 113 organic eggs (organic eggs are higher in vitamin D) or 10 high dose Tonic drinks everyday for 12 weeks. So that’s 250 ug / 10,000 IU of vitamin D everyday for 12 weeks to become unwell and in Tonic we put 25 ug / 1,000 IU of vitamin D per drink.

Ever wanted to test your vitamin D levels? Tonic has partnered with Kiwno, the world’s first rapid vitamin D test so you can find out what your vitamin D levels are at instantly in the comfort of your own home. No faff with posting kits to labs. Shop Now.
