Chicken Soup when sick

It's that time of year again; you’re sniffling, coughing and not wanting the leave the comfort of bed, I know that’s how I'm feeling. When you feel like this, it's important to pay extra attention to your diet and make sure you're getting the nutrients your body needs to heal and recover. But do you know why staying hydrated when you’re ill, will get you feeling 100% again 🤔

Hydration and Health

Did you know our bodies are around 45-60% water? Water keeps us going from day to day so we can feel and perform our very best, so what happens if we don’t have enough? Well, we become dehydrated, dehydration occurs when we lose more bodily fluids than we take in.

Drinking enough water helps keep your body's systems functioning properly and can help flush out toxins. It's important to drink extra water when we are unwell. Common symptoms or immune responses (ways of our body fighting the virus) such as fever, diarrhoea, vomiting and loss of appetite, can all lead to dehydration. So, make sure to sip on that H2O, especially when you're not feeling your best.

Chicken Bone Broth 🍲

Gone are the days of grandma, your neighbour or a friend cooking chicken soup for you! So, bone broth is the next best thing; Bone broth is a great source of amino acids, like glycine and proline, which can help reduce inflammation in the body and improve gut health. It also contains electrolytes like potassium and sodium, which can help replenish fluids and minerals lost during illness.

Chicken is really high in carnosine a dipeptide molecule made up of two amino acids which has been shown to reduce oxidative stress and help reduce symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections

You can even make your own soup from these broths in a matter of minutes. Perhaps you have some left over chicken, or some vegetables in the fridge which have seen better days, this is their chance to shine, roughly chop add to the broth, season as required and top with fresh herbs such as coriander or parsley and a squeeze of lemon 🍋 This is a sure shot way of making you feel better this cold and flu season.

Pick up some ginger, lemon and honey 🍯 🍋

Sipping on some hot ginger and lemon can give your body the support it needs to heal. Ginger in the drink can help alleviate symptoms of a cold or flu by reducing inflammation and congestion in the body. It can also help soothe a sore throat and settle an upset stomach.

Lemon, meanwhile, is packed with Vitamin C, which helps boost the immune system and fight off any unwanted invaders and honey is a natural antibacterial and can help soothe a cough or sore throat. Not to mention, the warmth of the drink can help soothe and relax the body, making you feel better both inside and out. So, next time you're feeling a little off, give the hot ginger and lemon a try, it's a simple and delicious way to take care of yourself.
