Winter Immunity Starts Now

Why October Is the Time to Support Your Immune System

Every year, without fail, clients at my clinic see the same pattern. The first cold snap hits, someone in the house comes down with something, and that’s when the immune supplements finally come out of the cupboard. I understand the instinct – but by December, you’re playing catch-up.

October is the real turning point. Nutrients like vitamin C, zinc and vitamin D need time and consistency to support normal immune function. They’re not a same-day fix once you’re already run down.

In our latest research survey, 57% of parents whose child fell ill after the return to school said it happened within the first month of a new term.

What Happens to Our Immune System in Autumn?

From October, the UK sun sits too low for our skin to make meaningful vitamin D. We’ve covered exactly why the NHS recommends supplementing from October in our dedicated vitamin D guide.

Children are back in classrooms sharing germs right as their own vitamin D production drops off. A balanced diet remains the foundation. Autumn is also a brilliant time for seasonal eating – read our seasonal autumn foods guide for what’s at its best right now.

The Key Nutrients

Vitamin C supports the normal function of immune cells and works as an antioxidant. Because it’s water-soluble and can’t be stored, regular daily intake matters more than an occasional high dose. Good sources: kiwi, citrus, peppers and leafy greens.

Zinc and selenium: These two trace minerals do quiet, essential work. Zinc supports immune cell development and mucosal barriers. Selenium contributes to antioxidant defence. European soil is naturally low in selenium, so Brazil nuts, fish, eggs and wholegrains are worth leaning on.

Reishi contains beta-glucans and triterpenes that appear to modulate immune activity. A randomised, placebo-controlled trial in healthy adults found reishi-derived beta-glucan was associated with favourable changes in immune markers. More on reishi and other adaptogens here.

Sleep and Recovery as Immune Foundations

A well-known study found people sleeping less than six hours a night were considerably more likely to develop a cold than those sleeping seven or more. Supplements won’t fill this gap.

Supporting the Whole Family

Adults: Tonic Immunity + Vitality combines vitamin C, D3, zinc and selenium with reishi extract, vitamin A, E and K2. If you already take Tonic Adult Multi Gummies, Immunity + Vitality is designed to layer on top in autumn and winter.

Children: Tonic Kids Immunity Gummies provide vitamin C, D3, zinc, vitamin A and B12 alongside elderberry extract. For babies 6 months+: Tonic Baby Multi Drops provide vitamins A, C and D.

Food comes first. Supplements fill genuine gaps – they don’t replace a plate with a decent variety of fruit, vegetables, protein and wholegrains.

Start in October, not December. Build the habit now, so your body has the runway it actually needs.
